Catholics in the 21st Century

Ritornati dalle vacanze di Natale, alcuni studenti del triennio dei licei sono stati invitati dai loro Presidi a partecipare a un ciclo di lezioni sul cristianesimo e il suo rapporto con il reale e le discipline che lo studiano.
L'eccezionalità di queste lezioni è che vi partecipano studenti di Milano insieme a studenti di Miami in videoconferenza e sono tenute da un professore della Columbus High School, scuola dove stanno studiando alcuni ragazzi del quarto anno.
Ciò che più colpisce chi partecipa a queste lezioni è la spontaneità con cui gli americani rispondono alle domande poste dai professori, e proprio questo ha pian piano convinto alcuni di noi a superare l'imbarazzo causato dalla difficoltà di parlare in inglese e ci ha sempre di più coinvolto nel dialogo e nell'amicizia con i nostri compagni di corso.

CONTENTS
The course will provide a coherent knowledge of the complex reality we will face during the 21st Century. This course is designed to integrate the study of Religion and Social Sciences with the rest of the subjects: Sciences, Humanities, etc. It develops an understanding of the relation between our faith and all reality. Topics discussed will be the following:

o Fundamentals of Christianity
o Fundamentals of Catholic education
o Social Sciences and Catholic faith
o Catholic view of History
o Faith and reason
o Catholics and:
 Politics
 Economics
 Terrorism
 Globalization
 International affairs
o Social Doctrine of the Church
o Principles of solidarity and subsidiarity
o Church and Estate relations
o Catholic faith and:
o Sciences
o Medicine
o Literature
o Art
o Music
o Sports

METHODOLOGY
Junior and/or senior students in “Columbus High School” (Miami, USA) and Licei of the “Fondazione Sacro Cuore” (Milan, Italy) will join two classrooms, one in USA and the other in Italy. Both classrooms will be connected during first semester of 2008 (Januray-May) on line through the internet. Lessons of 45-50 minutes will take place early in the morning in Miami (+ 6 hours in Milan). The teacher coordinator – Mr. José Rodelgo-Bueno – in “Columbus” will develop a regular class explaining the contents and inviting students in both sides to establish dialogues about it exchanging opinions. A teacher aid – Mr. Luca Montecchi – will accompany students in Milan. Sometimes keynote speakers (politicians, university professors, bishops, scientists, etc.) from USA and Italy will be invited to address certain topics and to answer questions of the students.
